Taking the junk out of the trunk

Behind the bumper of a Subaru WRX or STi is a big hunk of metal. It’s great for protection when you get your backside smashed by some lady that isn’t paying attention while putting on make up or a teen driver texting and not paying attention to the road. However, it’s not as practical for motorsports, especially for non wheel to wheel Time Attack.

I came into the shop and I saw Danny feverishly working on the rear bumper beam by working on the main points where it attached to the frame.

“Uhhhhh….” was the thing I heard. Trying to plasma cut it didn’t help. It was still attached. Then Jason came into the picture.

Jason put his welding / cutting skills onto the beam to show it “what’s up”. He completely cut it off.

It looks like we have to remove it straight from the frame. With some quick turns of a ratchet, Danny was able to take off the beam.

It came off right off! It was a good 30lbs and it was a relief to take it off. We’re finding more places to take off the weight on the car. Keep an eye out on the blog for more!
