Apollo Performance at S3: Subaru Summer Solstice!

We just got back from San Diego where the 2nd Annual S3: Subaru Summer Solstice was held and boy did we have a great time! Before we arrived in San Diego we met up with our friend Mike from UsVersusThem for a bit of a shopping spree (more on that later) and we displayed our cars at the Active Board Shop where he was featured.

This is S3’s second year and our very own Yukio was one of the organizers of the event along with shop friend, Sashin. It was great to see the amounts of people and vendors that came out. Even competing, local shops even displayed next to each other with out any drama. That’s how it should be!

Gino’s WRX received a lot of attention and great positive feedback at our display at S3!

Scott from Koyo Radiators came by and snapped pictures of Gino’s WRX. Thanks for the love, Scott!

Gino had a bit of a pep talk with the Garrett GT4088 Turbo… “Let’s make more power!”

Gino was happy about the set up and this was its only 2 major display we have had with the WRX!

Yukio’s WRX also shared the booth spot with Gino featuring his newly installed side skirts and front APR Performance Splitter.

Again, Scott from Koyo showed up and showed some love!

Danny also entered his STi into the show! It made a lot of buzz.

In fact, so much buzz that Danny won “The Essence of S3 Award!”

Shop friend, Ruben took a picture with the World Famous Jeri Lee… so did Tommy but he was too busy pwning people on his game.

Yukio’s wagon is mostly stickerless but stickier with Bridgestone RE-11 Tires!

Yukio goes through tires and wheels like it’s going out of style but his streak is going to stop with this ultra sticky Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 tires! He couldn’t wait to get these bad boys on his Daily Driver Tommy Kaira wheels.

First off, the tires were a dream to mount. The rubber is a softer compound so we didn’t have to fight the mounting machine to get the Bridgestone RE-11 Tires on. Second, the tread pattern is just pain mean.

Yukio’s initial response to the tires when he took it on the road was extremely positive. “These tires are noticeably quieter on the road than most of other competitors tires. They didn’t have that drone that kills the ride quality like other UHP tires. Secondly, the car handles like it’s a go-kart. Although I don’t drive extremely aggressively on the street since that should be done on the track, the harder turns that I take, the car goes into it, effortlessly.” With that kind of feed back, we’re super excited to see what capabilities these Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 tires have!

The Bridgestone RE-11 Tires arrive at Apollo Performance

We received an email from our generous sponsor, Rod from Bridgestone, notifying us that our 16 tires were ready to be picked up… WHAT?!?! 16?!?!?! Initially we requested for a set for each WRX but since it was a longer weekend of Time Attack, we were ready to pick up the super sticky RE-11 tires.

Here’s Yukio’s 245-40-18 Bridgestone RE-11 tires were quite beefy when they came in. Their contact patch was quite noticeable and the 245 width seems a tad wider than the standard 245. The rubber was soft to the touch which will aid us in some great gripping.

Gino’s RE-11’s where the beefier (and maximum width allowed for Street All Wheel Drive) 255-35-18 tires. They were very wide. In fact, when Danny measured them, the contact patch was close to 10 inches! This will be a great tire.

The Potenza RE-11 is designed to combine traction, handling and driving control with good noise and ride comfort. The Potenza RE-11 is tuned for dry and wet conditions, but like all summer tires is not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.

The Potenza RE-11 is the first Potenza street tire to incorporate Bridgestone’s 3D Seamless Stealth technology originally introduced in their Formula 1 and GP2 racing tires. The Potenza RE-11 features an asymmetric tread pattern that combines massive outboard independent shoulder blocks interlocked with a notched circumferential intermediate rib that provides the lateral stiffness needed to enhance steering response and increase dry cornering traction. Inboard, a continuous intermediate rib and notched shoulder rib are separated by wide, straight circumferential grooves that provide water evacuation to resist hydroplaning and enhance wet traction.

The tire’s internal structure features a custom designed asymmetric shape that helps distribute footprint pressure more evenly by keeping the straighter outboard sidewall from “falling down” while helping the more rounded inboard sidewall resist “falling away” during aggressive cornering. Two wide steel belts reinforced by spirally wound nylon provide strength, uniform ride quality and high-speed capability.”
